Public Corruption: a Saboteur of Democracy

a Saboteur of Democracy

Public Corruption

Giving or receiving bribes, the abuse of power, or use of public office or resource for personal gain is a chief enemy of democracy because it enthrones personal interest at the expense of the collective interest and will of the people. It is critically important to encourage and build strong and informed electorates and institutions that would safeguard democratic values, resist the rule of “persons”, and totally expose and discourage public corruption.

Sadly, Nigeria is less of a functioning society primarily because of widespread corruption. For example, Nigeria is a leading oil producing country, and yet the country does not have stable electricity, and often experiences gasoline shortages. It is no brainer that the corruption of those who wield governmental power and authority is a major reason for this dysfunction. Therefore, exposing the harmful effects of corruption on the life of the society, and canvassing ways to guard against it, is a valuable public service that contributes to a functioning and stable society.
